2003 07 30 Bruneau Dunes, ID

Wednesday.  The 30th.  July.

I should say again it was hot today.  105 in Mountain Home and Boise, Idaho.  105.  It was a degree or two hotter in Bruneau, near the Dunes.  (It was worse in Baghdad though.  109 today, hotter later in the week.)

It was nicer early in the morning, only about 65 before sunrise.  I was out early and down to the dunes and tromping around.  Here are a few snaps.

There were a lot of these owls in the trees at the edge of the lake near the dunes.  I have never seen owls this close.

These digital snaps don't really do justice to the color of the sand.  It's quite gray and looks very cool in the reddish light at dawn.

I did a lot of walking around and shot up a lot of film.  It was tiring though, and by 8:30 AM I think it was close to 90.  I was hot and tired so I quit.  The light was shot anyway.

I did not do much in the middle of the day.  Normally I would drive around and look for new places to shoot, but it was just too hot to do any of that.  I drive up I84 to Boise instead and walked around.  Boise is about 55 miles from the dunes.  Very nice medium sized city with Boise State University and the state capitol and the Boise River.  I came back and went out on the dunes again at sunset but it was so hot and I was so tired I only shot a couple of rolls of film and bagged it.  (The tripod I have got so hot it was hard to handle!)

For you sunset fans here is the sunset today.  I took this across the road from the place I am staying.  Got a little of the truck stop nature of the area.

Make sure you look square on to your monitor for these, and actually all of the pictures.  The sunsets are quite a deep red.

Tomorrow the dunes again at dawn and then I am going to drive back into the coolness of Nevada.
